Meesapulimala

Meesapulimala is an Indian peak, the next south of the second highest peak (Manna Malai 2,659 metres (8,724 ft)) of the Western Ghats on the Theni District, Tamil Nadu and Idukki District Kerala border. Its peak is 2,640 metres (8,661 ft) above sea level. The name derives from its appearance from the southwest of a tiger with prominent whiskers (“Moustache”). It is located in between the Annamalai Hills and Palani Hills near Suryanelli around 20 km away from Munnar. The Kolukkumalai tea estate, Top Station and Tipadamala (2135 m) is also nearby.

Treks to the peak via Rhodo Valley (favourable for rhododendron flowers) can be organized through the Kerala Forest Development Corporation in Munnar. The trekking path from Kolukkumalai to Meesapulimala is highly restricted.

Wildlife including the Nilgiri Tahr, sambar deer, wild gaur, wild dogs and even the sloth bear.

Any one like to visit  Meesapulimala, first step is take entry pass from KFDC office in KFDC flower garden. Only Pass entered visitors vehicles are allowed to Meesapulimala. Two KDHP check posts are on the way, They need to check the pass and travellers details. Rout is Munnar- KFDC flower garden- silent valley estate- Base camp .First you have to reach the base camp of the mountain peaks. The total distance from the city centre to this base camp is nearly 42 km. You can cover this distance via the Suryanelli-Kolukkumalai tea estate road. But if that sounds boring, there is another, more picturesque option too. The very first thing you have to do is travel to Mattupetty via the magnificent Aruvikkad estate. This journey is 24 km long and will take you about an hour.

Rise early to begin your 6 hour trek up Meesapulimala peak. A reasonable level of fitness is required to reach the top (2640m). You’ll pass through carpets of tea bushes and swathes of pine forests on your ascent. You’ll be with a local guide who will carry drinks/snacks and a packed lunch.  These mountains are indeed a mesmeric experience. The cool mountain air, lush green surroundings, the gushing streams and the blooming Rhododendrons along the valleys all add exquisiteness to the legend of the mountains. They form the perfect habitat for variety of wildlife and bird population.
